Local SEO: how to get found on Google in Annecy (and anywhere else)

Google profile, local pages, reviews, consistent contact details and local links: the local SEO levers to get found in Annecy, Lyon or your own town.

Canal and colourful houses in Annecy's old town

“Marketing agency Annecy”, “plumber near me”, “coffee shop Lyon”: a large share of searches have local intent. For a shop, a restaurant or a service provider, appearing in these results (especially the Google Maps block) can make a huge difference. That is what local SEO is about. Here are its main levers, using Annecy as an example; the method works for any town.

How Google ranks local results

Google says it mainly relies on three criteria:

  • relevance: do your profile and website match what the person is looking for?
  • distance: how far are you from the person or the place searched?
  • prominence: are you known, cited, recommended (reviews, links, mentions)?

You can’t change distance, but you can do a lot for relevance and prominence.

1. A complete Google Business Profile

This is the number one lever: precise primary category, description, opening hours, photos, services or products, regular posts and replies to reviews. We detail every point in our Google Business Profile guide (written for restaurants, but valid for any local business).

2. Identical contact details everywhere

Name, address and phone number must be strictly identical on your website, Google profile, social media and directories. Inconsistencies (an old address, a different number) blur the signals and lose customers.

3. Local pages on your website

  • a page title mentioning your business and your town;
  • a complete contact page with address, map and opening hours;
  • if you work in several towns, one page per area with genuinely specific content (local customers, travel, local particularities), not the same text with the town name swapped;
  • LocalBusiness (or Restaurant) structured data where relevant.

4. Customer reviews

Reviews affect prominence and click-through rate. Ask for them regularly and reply to each one. Our article on customer reviews details the method.

Being mentioned by local websites strengthens your prominence: tourist office, traders’ associations, local press, partners, events you sponsor, chamber of commerce. Favour quality and relevance over quantity.

6. A fast, mobile-friendly website

Local searches very often happen on a smartphone, sometimes in the street. A slow or hard-to-read mobile site loses these customers. See our article on Core Web Vitals.

7. Content rooted in your area

Articles on local topics, events, partnerships, case studies of regional customers: this content shows your local roots and answers specific searches. In Annecy, for example: tourist seasonality, lakeside businesses, outdoor brands in Haute-Savoie.

How long before results?

Fixing your Google profile and contact details can have an effect within a few weeks. Work on reviews, links and content builds over several months. Local SEO is a lasting investment that complements broader SEO.

Frequently asked questions

Can I appear in a town where I have no address? In the Google Maps block, it’s hard: proximity matters. In standard results, useful, specific local pages can make you visible.

Are directories still useful? A few quality directories relevant to your sector, yes, mainly for consistent contact details. Avoid mass listings.
