E-commerce product pages: the method to make them convert
Title, photos, description, benefits, reassurance, reviews and SEO: a step-by-step method to write e-commerce product pages that drive more sales.
In an online store, the product page plays the role of the in-store sales assistant. It must present the product, answer questions, remove doubts and make people want to add it to their basket. An incomplete or vague page drives away visitors who were genuinely interested. Here is a simple method that works on your own site and on your marketplaces.
1. A clear, precise title
The title must say exactly what the product is, with the information people need to choose it: product type, brand, main feature, variant (size, capacity, colour).
- Avoid: “The Gourmet”
- Better: “Gift box of 6 artisan jams - Savoy fruit - 6 × 120 g”
This title also helps SEO: it contains the words your customers type into the search bar.
2. Photos that replace touch
Online, customers can neither touch nor try. Photos do that job:
- a main photo on a neutral background, sharp and well lit;
- several angles and close-ups of details (material, finish, label);
- a lifestyle photo so people can picture themselves using it;
- a sense of scale (a hand, an everyday object, a model).
A short video can also help a lot for technical products or clothing.
3. A benefit-led description
Features say what the product is; benefits say what it does for you. Both matter, but lead with benefits.
- Feature: “Double-walled stainless steel insulated bottle.”
- Benefit: “Your water stays cool all day, even in the sun.”
Structure the description for quick reading: a few introductory sentences, then a bulleted list of key points.
4. Practical information
Unanswered questions are one of the main reasons people abandon a purchase. Add:
- dimensions, weight, composition, capacity;
- a size or compatibility guide;
- care or storage instructions;
- delivery times and costs, visible before the basket;
- returns conditions.
5. Reassurance
Near the “Add to basket” button, a few reassuring elements make a difference: secure payment, free delivery above a certain amount (if you offer it), easy returns, local manufacturing, reachable customer service. Stay factual: only show what you actually deliver.
6. Customer reviews
Reviews answer questions better than any description: “runs large”, “perfect as a gift”, “fast delivery”. Systematically ask for a review a few days after delivery, and reply carefully to negative ones.
7. An obvious buy button
The add-to-basket button should be visible without searching, in a contrasting colour, with a clear label. On mobile, it should stay reachable without scrolling all the way back up. We cover more levers in our article on conversion rate.
8. Product page SEO
- a page title and meta description unique to each product;
- a unique description, never copied from the manufacturer;
- alt text that describes the images;
- links to complementary products and to the category.
A checklist for your product pages
Before publishing a page, check: precise title, at least four photos, benefits first, complete specs, delivery and returns visible, reassurance, reviews, clear button, unique copy. If a box is missing, that’s often where sales are lost.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a product description be? Long enough to answer every question, no longer. For a simple product, 100 to 200 well-structured words are often enough; a technical product needs more.
Can I reuse the manufacturer’s description? It’s not recommended: the same text appears on dozens of websites, which helps you neither stand out nor rank well.
